  8. Email may be the most widespread network application and the World Wide
  9. Web may be the most mind blowing, but I am firmly convinced that USENET
  10. is the one which will have the most significant social implications.

  12. With _USENET: Netnews for Everyone_ Fristrup has tried to spread the
  13. good news as widely as possible; her book is an introduction aimed at
  14. the complete novice to the net.  It begins with a 40 page introduction
  15. which provides a very brief description of what USENET is and how
  16. it works and (thank God!) gives a minimum set of netiquette rules.
  17. This is followed by 200 pages listing all the groups (and accompanying
  18. FAQs) in the main hierarchies.  (The book appears to have been
  19. written a year ago, so this is out of date, but it will still give
  20. newcomers some idea of what's available and where to look for things.)
  21. The third section explains how to go about getting USENET access and
  22. mentions some of the other tools around (ftp, gopher, WWW, etc.).
  23. The appendices contain some of the well known pieces on USENET (mostly
  24. Gene Spafford's work), a list of all the alt newsgroups (really out
  25. of date by now!), some stuff about newsreaders and suggestions for
  26. further reading.

  28. I'm not sure the price tag on _Netnews for Everyone_ is really
  29. justifiable - an awful lot of it was presumably either machine
  30. generated or just copied - and I haven't really looked at alternatives,
  31. but it's readable and seems to cover all the essentials.  I won't
  32. have any qualms about passing it on to my users.
